Five Things To Consider Before You Reupholster Your Furniture

If you’ve ever had an estimate to reupholster a piece of your furniture, you’ve discovered that upholstery is an expensive undertaking with quite a few considerations that you’ll have to make to get your piece just right. You may have asked yourself, “Why should I reupholster when I can purchase new for less?” You may indeed be able to cut your expenses by purchasing a new piece of furniture, but it will not be a valued comparison in quality. Upholsterers are master craftsmen applying their skills with quality goods to create a piece that is uniquely yours and, more importantly, will last for years to come.

Is Your Furniture Worth Reupholstering?

Ask Yourself These Five Questions.

Recovering Gramma’s favorite chair or a treasured family heirloom may be worth its weight in gold - But, wait! You don’t want to change the overall look, that part that makes you happy you saved the piece in the first place! To keep this favored furnishing as close to its original appeal as possible, consider replacing the inner workings:

  • Retie and add new springs

  • Replace the foam in the cushions

  • Rebuild the frame

  • Recover - If the fabric is salvageable, reuse it. If not, try to save as much of the fabric as possible to incorporate with the new fabric, perhaps enough for the back of the chair where it won’t soon be worn through.

Tip: Add interest to your furnishings with decorative pillows in contrasting patterns.
